PLACES OF INTEREST IN LOMBOK ISLAND

Rinjani Mountain National Park

Historically and culturally, Gunung Rinjani has important significance to both Sasak and Balinese, Muslim and Hindu alike, and is considered a “Home of the Gods”. Pilgrimages are made to the mountain, offerings placed, and many people visit the volcano to pray and bathe in the pools and hot springs, which are said to have healing powers. Each year, around the full moon in October or November, a sacred pilgrimage called “Pekelem” takes place, when gold and other gifts are thrown into the lake near the summit as offerings to the Gods.

Lombok is dominated by Mount Rinjani, the Indonesia's second highest volcano (after Mt. Kerinci in Sumatra). Located in the province of Nusa Tenggara Barat (West Nusa Tenggara), it's dense primary rainforest still covers the steep slopes of the mountain complex.
Lombok is home to many natural attractions, including the world famous volcano, Gunung Rinjani, located on the north of the island. Visitors from all around the world come to Lombok every year to climb Gunung Rinjani, either to its awe-inspiring crater lake or to the demanding summit with panoramic views across the waters to Gunung Agung, Bali's famous sister volcano. “Gunung” is Bahasa Indonesia for mountain.

Senggigi Beach

her big sister mountain Rinjani, here in Lombok.  In the town centre of Senggigi you will find all of your needs catered for from top restaurants to exciting nightlife and bars, as well as day-to-day necessary bank machines, internet services, supermarkets and health clinics, tours and guides, souvenir shopping and happy, friendly, smiley people.

Senggigi Beach is to Lombok what the Kuta Beach area is to Bali in that it is the most popular tourist centre of the island. However, that is where the similarity ends. Senggigi Beach is an idyllic, peaceful beach, offering safe swimming and snorkeling, and has a reef area perfect for surfing. Along the beach, you will find a variety of accommodation from 5 star hotels to local losmen, up-market restaurants and local warungs.

Senggigi Beach is surrounded by tropical plants and palm trees with a backdrop of green hills and mountains. With the mountains and hills behind you, you face out to a wide ocean where on the horizon Mount Agung in Bali watches

The Gilis (Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air)

Gili Trawangan, by far the busiest and heavily developed of these islands now boasting some very comfortable accommodation in combineation with the more simple backpacker beach pads.

Gili Gili Meno, the smallest and most peaceful island, low-key with some simple places to stay.

Gili Air, closest to the mainland and with the largest local population.

Trictly speaking, the name "Gili Islands" is rather redundant as gili simply means "small island" in Sasak, but the name has stuck and is universally used and understood in Lombok.

The three 'Gili' Islands are one of Lombok's most popular tourist destinations. The islands are very relaxed and laid-back, with countless little beachside cafes serving up delicious food, and fresh fish grills. There are no cars or motorbikes on the islands. People either walk around, or pick up the local transport (cidomo) horse cart.
People travel to the Gili's to enjoy the relaxation, beaches, snorkeling and diving. There are now many up-market restaurants, bars and accommodation on the islands.
Note that there are no ATMs on the islands, so bring plenty of cash with you. From west to east, the islands are:

Kuta & Surf Spots Kuta Beach

Particularly there are four surf-points, which are highly recommended for surf lovers. Within the Lombok's Kuta Beach there are two points, namely Gerupuk that provides neutral waves, and Aik Guling offering waves mostly for the left-handed. Several kilometers to the West of Kuta Beach there is Pengantap desert point that provides various grades of attractions, but it is ideal only during the periods of June, July, August, December and January. The next break is at Ekas Beach that reserves challenging waves and reef-break-points, reachable by boat or by land from Kuta Beach on an approximately one and half hour cruise.

This spectacularly picturesque beach is one of the most popular beaches in Lombok. Named after Princess Mandalika, a princess from Sasak legend who was unable to make a decision about which of her many suitors she should marry. Her only solution was to transform herself into sea worms. Now every year a ceremony is held here on Kuta Beach, when the sea worms appear traditionally known as 'Nyale'.

Surfing Lombok's Waves
Most of Lombok's south coasts offer surf-seekers challenging waves of various grades.
